As promised, I stated that I would come back and update on this case. My previous posts on this case are here and here

It looks like the charges against Jussie have been dropped. Stories are here and here. Last we heard, he was indicted on 16 felony counts for staging his own racist and homophobic attack.

According to CNN, “…his attorneys hailed [dropping charges] as vindication but angered top city officials who still are calling his victimhood claim a hoax.

The mayor stated that he believes that Jussie did this to advance his career, but is now walking around like he’s innocent. The mayor went on to say that things would be different if he wasn’t an “actor with influence.”

According to CNN, “The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office released little about why it abandoned the 16 felony disorderly conduct charges, except to say it came after reviewing the case’s facts, and that the actor agreed to forfeit his $10,000 bond. Parts of the case will be sealed.”

Jussie did perform 16 hours of community service for the Rainbow Push Coalition founded by Rev. Jesse Jackson.

According to CNN, Jussie stated that if he were lying, he wouldn’t “put his family through the fire like this.” He went on to say, that if he did something like his, he wouldn’t be his mother’s son and that he would continue to fight for the justice and equality of marginalized people everywhere.

Just b/c Jussie had the charges dropped doesn’t mean that the police, attorneys, and judges believe that he’s innocent.

According to the HuffPost article, the Assistant State’s Attorney stated, “We stand behind the investigation, we stand behind the decision to charge him and we stand behind the charges in the case. The mere fact that it was disposed of in an alternative manner does not mean that there were any problems or infirmities in the case or the evidence.”

This basically means they still think he’s guilty. Even with all the evidence they had, they believe this was the best resolution for this case. With all that said, the evidence and investigation weren’t wrong and they stand behind their work. This is just what’s best and they need to focus on more violent offenders and Jussie isn’t one of them.

The Assistant State’s Attorney continues, “we work to prioritize violent crime and the drivers of violent crime. Public safety is our number one priority. I don’t see Jussie Smollett as a threat to public safety,” according to HuffPost.

Jussie’s family released a statement saying, “Our son and brother is an innocent man whose name and character has been unjustly smeared… Jussie is a son, a brother, a partner, a champion for human rights, and a genuine soul who would never be capable of what he was falsely accused of. He was the victim of an assault and then falsely blamed for his own attack. He’s been vindicated.”

In terms of Empire, which airs on Fox, the producers and writers released a statement saying that Jussie was removed from the final two episodes of this season after the initial charges were filed.

According to HuffPost, the producers and writers stated, “Jussie Smollett has always maintained his innocence and we are gratified on his behalf that all charges against him have been dismissed.”

Word of Advice:

download (1)I am a victim’s advocate in real life and I said in one of the previous posts that I would never blame a victim. I’m glad that I took that stance and stood by that conviction.

When this case started, many people started talking online about what was fishy about the case on Jussie’s end and how they just knew something had gone awry b/c of abc picture, the location, the weather, and xyz statement. They were talking about how the Chicago PD is so corrupt and crooked and Jussie shouldn’t call himself the “gay Tupac.”

Y’all know how it goes. Folks are always going to have something to say and believe what they want to believe. That’s their right.

I know we may never know what really happened on that frigid, cold day in January, but we do know that all the charges have been dropped, Tuh-day! All 16 of those bogus felony disorderly conduct charges that Chicago PD tried to pin on him were dropped and his record will be cleared like it never happened.

I like that his story never changed and he never wavered on his innocence. What I do hope tho is that he is able to move forward and use this as a teachable moment. Finally, I look forward to all the people who just knew he was guilty to start back peddling now.

That’s always fun to watch! 😂😊
